- Before leaving, find out some information about your destination's history, culture, economy, politics, etc.
- Try to learn a few words of the local language; it will show the people you are interested in them.
- Take every occasion to get to know some of the people in the country you are visiting.
- Be open-minded and flexible regarding cultural differences.
- Take advantage as much as possible of local products and services, art, leisure, transportation, etc.
- If you are buying something, pay a fair price for it.
- Take pictures with discretion and as permission when needed. Be aware that in certain religious places and buildings it is forbidden to take pictures.
- Respect the environment and minimize the impact of your passage among plants and wildlife.
- Contribute to the conservation of cultural and environmental heritage, such as coral, archaeological sites, ivory, rare plants, etc.
- Keep garbage in its place when on excursions, beaches and in hotels. If there are no garbage cans, keep your garbage with you until you can dispose of it properly. If possible, find out if there are containers for recycling.
What is sustainable development ?
According to the WTO (World Tourism Organization), sustainable development is defined as follows: "development which responds to present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to respond to theirs. »
The tourist industry plays a major role in sustainable development. Tourism is rapidly evolving, and not without economic, social and physical consequences in the regions visited. That is why it is so important to act responsibly as a tourist in a foreign country.
